What to Wear for Family Photos (Without Overthinking It)
Every family photo season I hear the same question: "What should we wear?" And every season I give the same answer — coordinate, don't match.
Pick a palette, not a uniform
Choose 3-4 colors that work together and let each person pick something within that range. Earth tones photograph beautifully outdoors. Avoid neon colors and busy patterns — they pull the eye away from faces.
One person anchors, everyone else complements
Start with whoever has the strongest opinion. Build outward from their outfit. If she's wearing dusty blue and sage, put Dad in dusty blue, the kids in complementary solids.
Dress the kids last
Kids are the hardest to fit and the most likely to have opinions. Once the adults are sorted, fit the kids into the palette. Dress them in something they can actually move in.
The one rule that matters most
Wear something that makes you feel good. Confidence reads in photos. When in doubt, send me a photo of your outfit options before the session.
